The world is facing the serious challenge from new emerging diseases such as SARS, Bird Flu, Dengue, and also the old ones such as AIDS, malaria, and many others. Medicines are not the answers to combat them. A strategy to prevent their emergence is the key to ensure safety from these deadly diseases. These diseases emerge due to various spatial factors such as climate, environment, water quality and management, education, air pollution, natural disasters, social and many others. There is a need to understand the spatial relationship and impact of these factors on the human health. This will facilitate the decision makers in health sector to plan the strategy for a preparedness plan to combat the emergence of these diseases and ensure safer living to the people without the fear of diseases
The conference will focus on the use of GIS in health sector for exploring the various causative factors for diseases. There will also be deliberations on how to use GIS for better planning of health care systems.

Health GIS 2005
First symposium on HealthGIS was organised in Dec. 2005 in Bangkok. It was warmly attended by 350 delegates from 22 countries. It offered a wholistic picture of preparedness for combating epidemics and ensuring proper health care. Delegates felt a strong need for continuing this meeting once in every two years to achieve the target of operationalising Geoinformation Technologies for Health Care.
